Learning the Art of Undoing: Letting Go of Neck Tension
Saturday 4 April 2020, 1:30-4pm, at Avalon Yoga, Palo Alto, CA ($45-55)
It’s worse than you think
Neck tension isn’t just contributing to some of the most pervasive health issues of our time. It is itself reinforced by both chronic stress and poor posture, creating a self-reinforcing vicious cycle of neck tension, poor posture, and stress.
It’s even worse than that. Let’s say you have finally decided to address the problem head on, as it were. Congratulations. Sadly, our habit of tackling every problem in a striving, goal-oriented “must try harder” manner will absolutely not work with neck tension.
“Why,” you ask? “That approach has worked great for my start-up,” you say?
Neck tension is the result of your brain sending too many contraction messages to your neck muscles. In order for those muscles to relax, you need to literally figure out how to get your brain to do less, because the only way to relax a muscle is for the brain to stop sending it contraction messages. (Sadly, there is no such thing as a “relaxation message” that your brain can send). Solving your neck tension issues means learning the art of undoing on a very literal, physiological level.
