Letting go of neck tension means practicing the art of undoing.

Learning the Art of Undoing: Letting Go of Neck Tension

Saturday 4 April 2020, 1:30-4pm, at Avalon Yoga, Palo Alto, CA ($45-55)

Do you need more neck tension in your life?
The usual response to that question is a good chuckle, because painful neck tension is an absurdly common problem.
Neck tension isn’t just unpleasant. There is ample research linking it to poor posture as well as heart and lung disease. It is also a major contributor to depression and chronic stress, and all the chronic health issues associated with those two conditions.

It’s worse than you think

Neck tension isn’t just contributing to some of the most pervasive health issues of our time. It is itself reinforced by both chronic stress and poor posture, creating a self-reinforcing vicious cycle of neck tension, poor posture, and stress.

It’s even worse than that. Let’s say you have finally decided to address the problem head on, as it were. Congratulations. Sadly, our habit of tackling every problem in a striving, goal-oriented “must try harder” manner will absolutely not work with neck tension.

“Why,” you ask? “That approach has worked great for my start-up,” you say?

Neck tension is the result of your brain sending too many contraction messages to your neck muscles. In order for those muscles to relax, you need to literally figure out how to get your brain to do less, because the only way to relax a muscle is for the brain to stop sending it contraction messages. (Sadly, there is no such thing as a “relaxation message” that your brain can send). Solving your neck tension issues means learning the art of undoing on a very literal, physiological level.

The good news

The good news is that there are some simple tricks you can use to get your neck to relax, and some simple exercises that will teach you new movement patterns that will actually trigger relaxation in your neck.

The even better news is that as you learn how to undo neck tension, you are also learning techniques to disrupt poor posture and chronic stress.

This workshop is based on years of experimentation to find the most effective techniques to teach you to let go of neck tension, so that you can unlock true wellbeing in your life. In addition, you will also learn techniques that help reverse poor posture and still other techniques designed to disrupt your stress response. By learning techniques to address all 3 interrelated problems, you will take away from this workshop a truly effective toolkit that addresses all the underlying causes of neck tension.
