Arm Balances for (Almost) Every Body
Yoga Workshop 8-9 January 2020 at Blossom Studio, Chiang Mai
Do you find arm balances challenging? Would you like to find out why, and what to do about it?
Come join me for a thorough and fun exploration of arm balances – including handstand – that will help you build self-confidence and expand your yoga practice. In this workshop I will pinpoint the common issues that make arm balances challenging, and show you effective ways to address them (and no, it’s not just about arm strength). In the process, you will also learn how to manage your ego in your yoga practice and how to experience joy even under challenging circumstances.
Arm balances session 1: Saturday 14:00-17:00
Introduction to arm balances and underlying bio mechanics. We will focus on hip range of motion, and on simplifying arm balances to make them truly accessible. We will cover Crow, Side Crow, Dwi Pada Koundinyasana, Eka Pada Koundinyasana I, Eka Hasta Bhujasana, and Handstand.
Arm balances session 2: Sunday 14:00-17:00
Intermediate arm balances and underlying bio mechanics. We will focus on building upper body strength and finding joy in difficult poses. We will cover Tittibhasana, Ashtavakrasana, Eka Pada Koundinyasana II, Eka Pada Galavasana, Kukkutasana, Mayurasana.
If these lists of poses sound impossibly hard, don’t let that stop you from signing up for this workshop! It is truly designed to be accessible to anyone who can be comfortable in Downward Dog for a minute or two. I have developed some revolutionary techniques that allow you to approach all of these poses, even if you are not all that fit. Hip flexibility is just as important here as upper body strength, if not more so. If you have neither, this workshop will also teach you how to improve both. :)
The course includes a practice guide for you to take home. The guide includes photos and descriptions of a series of exercises to support your arm balance practice. Use it to continue working at home to make your arm balances more effortless and more enjoyable.
Prerequisites for arm balances workshop:
This course is designed for all yoga practitioners who wish to deepen their knowledge of the fundamentals of arm balances. No prior arm balance practice is required. However, being able to be comfortable in Downward Dog for a minute or more will enable you to get the most out of this workshop. If you are already comfortable taking your feet off the ground, you will nonetheless learn a wealth of new information. These techniques and anatomical and alignment background will transform your arm balance practice, making it safer, more effective, and more fun. Also highly recommended for yoga teachers who want to learn how to teach arm balances and handstand more effectively.
