A Lesson from a 2-Year-Old
Do you like speed bumps? (Or speed humps, judder bars, lomos de burro, or sleeping policemen, depending on where you are from.) I didn't think you did. Who does? I used to dislike them like everyone, but then I received a lesson from a 2-year-old: a lesson in acceptance. Not that my son is (or was) a buddha-like creature in [...]

What a truly inspiring, practical and friendly teacher. I was a novice to yoga practice but for years held an interest in yoga but no real understanding. I was lucky... read more enough to have a number of private classes with Gernot which have made a huge difference to my life both spiritually and physically with the added bonus of reduction is back and neck pain. Gernot has a wonderful & easy way of explaining every pose and flow and possesses vast technical and physiological knowledge which he helps you understand and therefore improve your practice. It was a wonderful start to my yoga journey. T

October 17, 2019I signed up for private sessions with Gernot because I have some hip and low back issues that my personal yoga practice often aggravate. It's not a stretch to say... read more I learned more from three thorough sessions with him than I did in my yoga teacher training. And by "more", I mean all those subtle little biomechanical adjustments that make a massive difference.
Gernot has an incredible knowledge of anatomy and physiology, and it's so well integrated into his yoga knowledge. Step by step, we went through all of my "troubling" asanas and transitions that produce pain and tension, and even those sneaky ones that feel fine but aren't doing my body any favours. There are certain things (bad movement habits) I simply couldn't have known without his insight and expertise. And I can apply them to my practice with instant results.
My practice (and body) are forever improved thanks to his knowledge and guidance. I highly recommend Gernot's classes (I go to those too) as well as his one-on-one teaching. Amazing experience - thankColleen T

I attended a 5-day yoga retreat led by Gernot in Chiang Dao. Gernot is a superb yoga teacher. He sent us a short simple questionnaire before the retreat and tailored... read more the yoga to our specific needs. Gernot is not the teacher to go to if you want better photos for your yoga Instagram feed or to achieve some impossible pose. He leads yoga that won’t injure you, that will help you improve alignment and posture, and will generally improve your wellbeing. His teaching is based an an incredible knowledge of physiology which he communicates really engagingly. He has spoilt me for other yoga teachers, who so often ask you to strive for poses that are not good for you. I will be using his extensive notes now (sent to us after the retreat) to help structure my personal practice.
December 20, 2019tcooper17I practiced for several months with Gernot back in 2012, so when I came back to Chiang Mai in late-2018 I was keen to go and see him again. He's... read more a teacher who has stayed in my yoga practice for the six years in between visits - I learnt so much from him the first time I visited CM. Upon going to one of his classes again in September 2018 it was clear straight away that he was every bit as good as I remember.
Gernot has a very wonderful, joyful and knowledgable approach to yoga and has used the many teachings he's received over the years to create his own take on yoga - one which for me is just right. His approach to correct alignment is thorough but enjoyable, inviting you to learn what's right for your body. His approach to the breath, in particular to not compromising it and making sure you can still enjoy the breath, even when in a more strong asana, is so important and so useful to learn.
Gernot is not a teacher who will just jump at the deep end with asanas. He will give more challenging variations if people are able and wish, but he is keen on a "less is more" approach, making sure that people understand fully what they are doing, and giving them the knowledge and awareness to know their own edge within an asana.
Of Gernot's four weekly classes they are also different levels, which makes it open beginners and more advanced people. His use of weekly themes to explore different aspects of yoga, such as "The Art of Balance", "Do Less, Feel More", are a great way to really to get to grips with different aspects of yoga.
For me a great sign of a good yoga teacher is when I try a class for the first time and come away afterwards feeling I've really taken something from the class and have something new to put into my practice. This is how I feel after every one of Gernot's classes. I hope to visit Chiang Mai again soon and if I do I will spend as much time learning with Gernot. He's a genuine, knowledgable and really lovely teacher, and my practice is so much better for having gone to his classes. I cannot recommend him enough.

December 3, 2019Christina EI was so excited to attend Gernot's workshop - Learning the Art of Undoing: Unlock True Wellbeing by Letting Go of Neck Tension at Naturally Yoga in Glen Rock,... read more NJ! I wanted to learn ways to help relieve tension not only for myself, but for my students. There are 2 herniated discs in my neck and I am always looking for ways to ease neck tension. This was a fantastic workshop!
Gernot explained things clearly and shared new ways to move into poses to keep the neck healthy. It was a great combination of anatomy explanation, visual cues, verbal cues, and being on the mat to experience the material. It was a fun and relaxed atmosphere. There were a number of "Ah ha!" moments and I left feeling happy and eager to start practicing and teaching what Gernot had shared. I have had a number of students who have been so grateful with the new information!
Truly grateful!!

I am a regular student of Gernot's classes in Chiang Mai for the past 5 years or so and have attended 4 retreats and several of his specialized workshops as... read more well. He is simply one of the best yoga teachers out there and explores yoga as a mindfulness and breath-centered practice, which really speaks to me. He is incredibly knowledgable about anatomy and is very well-versed in yoga philosophies and teachings. I learn something new every class! I am so grateful that he has so quickly adapted to an online platform so we can continue practicing together. Thank you Gernot!

November 20, 2019Amazing experience in the anatomy teaching and yoga class with Gernot. I really enjoyed with his humor trying to do more dynamic his classes at the same time learning... read more about how my body is and how I can share these knowledge in my class as teacher.
I learnt yoga is more than the asana. Yoga is how you are sitting, how you are walking, how much tension do you have in your muscles. Yoga is accept your body how it is and find your way to enjoy in the practice.
